The Belize Peace Movement is against taking Guatemala’s unfounded claim on Belize to the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Bobby Lopez, a senior member of the Belize Peace Movement, said the compromis is unconstitutional since it presumes that we could give up a part of our territory by allowing the ICJ to re-evaluate our borders. The Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno told the media that he feels that the ICJ is the best option.
John Briceno, Opposition Leader: “Because of the behavior of Guatemala I believe that we need to be able to take some form of action to get them out and there are few actions that we have available. We’ve been negotiating and negotiating endlessly for decades and whenever we are reaching right to the point of an agreement Guatemala pulls back. We have gone to the United Nations, the United Nations supported our independence in 1981 we are now a part of the OAS all the international organizations but what next. We can’t pick a fight with Guatemala, it would be suicidal so the only other thing I believe at this time that we have is to go to court.”
The Belize Peace Movement is presently challenging the compromis, and is seeking the services of a law firm from one of the CARICOM member states.
