Yesterday, the People’s United Party honored the Father of the Nation, George Cadle Price, who led Belize to its independence on September 21st, 1981. The former Prime Minister was well known for his emphasis on service to the nation. It is noteworthy to mention that this week we also lost another great leader, Dean Russell Lindo who was one of the founders of the United Democratic Party. The Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno spoke on Lindo’s passing.
John Briceno, Opposition Leader: “Dean Lindo was certainly considered a political giant in Belize and is going to go in the history books for all the work that he has done. Certainly especially in the time when the nationalist movement started and the PUP was winning elections and after elections and there was this feeling that we could end up with one party in this country and people like Dean Lindo fought tooth and nail to ensure that there was an opposition and we have to recognize that work. I consider Dean Lindo a true Belizean patriot. We may not have agreed politically but I have always had great respect and regard for Mr.Lindo and our sympathies go to this family and loved ones and to all Belizeans because we have truly lost a giant this week.”
Lindo died earlier this week at the age of 86. He will be given a state funeral at St. John’s Cathedral on Monday, September 24th.
