The Belize Broadcasting Authority (BBA) met with local broadcasters who are licensed by the BBA to discuss the importance of copyright compliance.  Copyright gives the author of any creative work the right to control the reproduction of their work and to receive payment for that reproduction.  For years, Belize has not been complying, but now there is a move towards compliance.  Francine Burns, Chairperson of the Belize Broadcasting Authority spoke to the media about today’s session.

The conventions that Belize is acceding to very shortly. A section that is really introduce them to issues that are coming to light and to have them interact with BSCAP as well who is the association that is in charge of collecting royalties on behalf of artist so it was really to facilitate that sort of networking and introduction.”

Olabimpe Akinkuolia Depty Registrar BELIPO: “These treaties are one the Rome convention for broadcasting, for producers of phonograms and performers. The two treaties are geared towards what you call the internet treaties. It is called the WIPO copyright treaty and the WIPO phonograms and producers treaty and this treaty just pretty much allows artist whether it is performers, actors, whether it is dramatic works and the opportunity for them to place it within the internet and also to be able to use various mechanism to protect their artistic works from not being reproduced by any infringers and the fourth treaty is called the Beijing Audiovisual Treaty. That mostly focuses on actors and actresses in motion pictures so and the final treaty is what you called the Marquess Treaty. It is geared towards the blind, the visually disabled and other disabled.”
