One of the three men shot on Thursday night on Santa Barbara Street has died. 24-year-old Jamal Elijio was shot to the right shoulder as he was socializing with 31-year-old Justin Richards and 27-year-old Marquin Drury. Richards was shot to the neck while Drury was grazed on his right leg. Elijio succumbed to his injuries yesterday at the hospital. Today, we caught up with his aunt, who said she doesn’t know why anyone would target her nephew and her son, Richards.
Aunt of Deceased: “I was about to reach the lane when I heard a gunshot so I swung back and I asked my gentleman where the gunshot was coming from and he said it sounded like it was coming from over there. Then my daughter came out and I asked her “Sasha did you hear gunshots?” and she said “No ma, I didn’t hear any gunshots.” then I hauled my bike and I said I’m going over so to see because I know those boys like to you know. So my daughter told me to wait on her, when I went around the lane and asked if she heard the gunshots and she said around so. So my daughter told me to ride ahead and see. When I got there I saw police going down Santa Barbara Street so I tuned around and said “Sasha, police.” so she told me “mommy hurry go see where it is.” I went and when I went I saw a lot of police out there on Santa Barbara. So when I saw I wanted to know what happened and I saw a bike on the ground but I know that front there is where my son and those boys are working. So the police was asking the neighbors if they saw who it was, so the young man told the police that they didn’t see and didn’t know but that was one of the young lady’s mom referring to me.
Reporter: Your son hasn’t said anything about anyone who wanted to harm him?
Aunt of Deceased :No he didn’t have any talking to us about anyone wanting to harm him but I know they are not trouble boys, they don’t give trouble.
Reporter: And your nephew could you tell me about him ? You said he grew up here?
Aunt of Deceased: Yeah he grew up and he was raised here because her mother is in the states but my nephew I know he was not a trouble person because on Thursday he came and spoke to us and we told him Jamal look and watch how you go about riding around here because I get to understand people want to do things to you but we don’t know who it is.”
While our archives showed no prior reports on Elijio, we did find that Justin Richards was shot at and grazed to the back in January 2013 on Flamboyant Street, Belize City. Drury was also involved in gun violence back in March 2014. Drury was reportedly engaged in a shoot out with Police on Mahogany Street. The shootout was followed by a high speed chase. Police caught up with Drury whose van was being pursued. Drury was grazed to the neck, face and leg. Police currently have no motive and no suspects in this latest shooting incident.
