Minor sentenced to ten years for killing his friend

A 16-year-old minor who pleaded guilty last month for the stabbing death of his friend and neighbor has been sentenced to 10 years; but, he received 6 ½ years in deduction for his guilty plea and other factors that were taken into consideration.  The minor, who was only 15 at the time of the incident, is accused of fatally stabbing Arkel August to the chest, killing him during a misunderstanding at a Basketball game on the Cumberbatch Field on April 28, 2018. In March the minor, now 16, pled guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.  At sentencing this afternoon, Justice Colin Williams told the minor that his starting point for his action in the killing of his friend is 10 years.  He took into consideration that he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter, that the accused was only 15 at the time of the murder, and the year he has served on remand, leaving him with 3 ½ years more to serve behind bars, effective March 26, 2019, the day he pleaded guilty.    On the day of the fatal stabbing, at around 3:00 p.m., at the Cumberbatch Field, on Caesar Ridge Road in Belize City, the then 15-year-old minor was accused of playing rough on the court and as a result, his coach sent him home.   The minor then left the court and returned with a knife and stabbed Arkel August, to the chest. The minor was represented by attorney, Darrell Bradley.
