Search for Jaswant Brooks

BROOK MISSING 1

It has been almost four days since 18-year-old Jaswant Brooks has been seen.  His family has grown concerned and are following all leads that they receive.

It has been almost four days since 18-year-old Jaswant Brooks has been seen.  His family has grown concerned and are following all leads that they receive.  Reporter Alisha Valentine has the story.

Authorities came up empty handed today when they set out in search of 18 year old Jaswant Brooks. Personnel from the Scenes of Crime Unit was in the area of Burdon Creek Bridge at mile six on the George Price Highway following a lead that Brooks was beaten and disposed of in the area. The Belize Coast Guard joined the search party just before noon. Jaswant’s family is desperately searching for clues to locate the missing teen. He was last seen on Police Steet in the St.Martin’s Area on Monday at 11am. His family became concerned when he did not return home that evening. According to his dad Kent Brooks Sr. the teen does not roam the streets as he suffers with seizures.

Kent Brooks Sr, Father of Missing Teen: “My son left me 10:30 Monday morning and from since then I have not seen him. I don’t have any idea if anybody would want to harm him. The last thing he told me was that he was going to buy a little weed on Police Street and since then he has not come back. I had some information come to me and they told me that a couple guys beat up my son and they dumped him at the creek so I just told Mr.Espat, one of the lead investigators about it and so we are out here trying to do a little search. I don’t know if it’s going to be futile or not. I just want to find my son if he’s dead or alive.”

Activist Jose Espat has become involved in the search mission and is apparently doing his own private investigation. According to him Brooks’ disappearance may be retaliation for a recent murder in rural Belize.

Jose Espat, Private Investigative Leader

Jose Espat, Private Investigative Leader: “ I was called yesterday by Mr.Brooks how is the father for Jaswant Brooks who has been missing. He was last seen going to buy and he never came back home, hours after the family became alerted and they started to worry because this is a young man that doesn’t go anywhere, doesn’t hang out, doesn’t have friends like that to hang out with and everybody that I’ve spoken to said that he is a very nice respectful young man so they became worried. I met with the family yesterday and we discussed the details which I can’t release at the moment. Mr.Brooks called me and he told me that he had gotten some information and that’s the reason why we are out here moving on that information and trying to do a search. At the moment we are waiting on the Coast Guard to come they will assist us with a boat to try and search the creek.”

While police made no mention of this morning’s search they did brief the media on the case during today’s press brief.

Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City

Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City: “On Tuesday Mr.Kent Brooks visited the Precinct 2 police station and reported that his son Jaswart Brooks 18 years of age was last seen on Monday when he left from his residence en route to purchase some items within the vicinity. So far Mr.Brooks cannot be located, police have conducted several searches in the George Price Highway but up to now he has not been located. We are working along with the family members and other groups to try to locate the male person. It is something that the family are saying he is a person that keeps to himself, he does not mingle with anybody and he does not do this kind of thing; he has never been out for so many days. That is why they are concerned and that is why we are looking and assisting with the many searches in the areas.”

Reporter: Is it believed that the disappearance of Mr.Brooks is in any way related to any recent murders that have occurred in the Belize district ?

Superintendent Alejandro Cowo, Head of Crimes Investigation Branch, Belize City: “That is what we are hearing from different source but we are following other leads that we have likewise.”

If anyone has any information on Brooks’ whereabouts they are asked to contact his sisters at 629-7979 OR 631-7793 or call the nearest police station.
