Crime continues to occur at an alarming rate partly due to the number of guns in the hands of criminals. The question has been asked as to how these criminals are getting their hands on guns. Senior Superintendent Howell Gillett shared one possibility.
Sr.Supt.Howell Gillett, Officer Commanding Eastern Division: “The Problem that we’ve seen or we’ve heard of through our intelligence team is that licensed gun owners are redistributing ammunition on the streets of Belize City and maybe in other parts of the country which I can’t clearly say. But what we are in discussion with and I believe the Minister of National Security and his team at the Ministry are moving head on into some fort of marking to ammunition because all the ammunition can’t be said to be coming from across the border, there has to be some local gun owners are who are redistributing in the streets. And if we can find that out, because that is a criminal offence if we could prove that then we we would move after that person or persons who are involved with that.”
The police continue to fight crime from all angles and the Senate recently approved a crime bill, which they hope will assist them in their fight.
