Dangriga boasts a new multipurpose complex. The building was named after a former UDP Minister and Area representative, Russel ‘Chiste’ Garcia. The sporting complex was officially opened on Saturday night. Hipolito Novelo has the story.

PATRICK FABER, MINISTER OF SPORTS

“It’s a distinct pleasure to declare the Russel Chiste Garcia Auditorium Officially open.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO REPORTING

Russel ‘Chiste’ Garcia was an Area Representative of Dangriga under the United Democratic Party banner and on Sunday night, a newly built auditorium was named after him.

ARREINI PALACIO, FAMILY MEMBER

“His vision was a better Dangriga and a more productive Belize, utilizing traditional skills. He is an extraordinarily accomplished man of the soil, literally; an expert, a pioneer, a teacher, a leader, an author, a trailblazer, a visionary, distinguished yet humbled Garifuna roots farmer from Dangriga.”

The multi-purpose complex includes a hardwood court, basketball and volleyball, courtside bleachers, fixed lighting and an elevated platform. Changing rooms for teams were also built inside the complex.

This, in memory of Garcia who was the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries between 1993 and 1998.

FRANCIS HUMPHREYS, MAYOR, DANGRIGA TOWN

“The measure of the man was not just in his service to his community but in the bigness of his heart and the selflessness with which he served this community something I know from personal experience.”

And everyone in Southern Belize will be able to experience the Russel Garcia Auditorium first hand.

PATRICK FABER, MINISTER OF SPORTS

“This auditorium will serve for the entire south of the country, in fact, you now all of the surrounding areas, all of the villages south of Dangriga and north of Dangriga or west of Dangriga will witness their home as well.”

ARREINI PALACIO, FAMILY MEMBER

“He was not a magician, he was not a rich superstar, he was no giant; the heights he attained are not impossible. He was a simple man who used simple skills and had big dreams, put those into action, never lost the big picture and never let go of Griga. What Chiste lacked in height he made up for in passion, loyalty, and dedication. Chiste lives on.”

Russel Chiste Garcia was 59 years old when he died in Dangriga Town on December 19, 2009. Reporting for Love News, I am Hipolito Novelo.
