Defence Minister comments on border incident

Last week three Guatemalan Armed Forces soldiers were captured on surveillance camera entering Belize’s Western Border office. The video is only fifty seconds long and it shows the Guatemalan soldiers causally making their way into the Western Border Office.  The video shows no sign of confrontation or aggression. But the fact that the soldiers were able to easily walk into the Western Border Office is alarming on its own. Today we asked Minister of Defence, John Saldivar about it.

JOHN SALDIVAR, MINISTER OF DEFENCE

“The Belize Defense Force does not have a permeant presence at the border, we are nearby for when problems arise but we don’t have a permanent presence there but we are looking at the security arrangements that currently exist too with a view correcting and taking the measures to ensure that there isn’t a repeat of what took place.”

HIPOLITO NOVELO, LOVE NEWS REPORTER

“Were you alarmed when you saw the video?”

JOHN SALDIVAR, MINISTER OF DEFENCE

“Well, we understand that because of the openness of the area that these things can happen and that’s why we are now looking to see how we can close the area so that this doesn’t occur.”

One of the Guatemalan soldiers appears to be a Kaibil. They specialize in jungle warfare tactics and counter-insurgency operations.
