In Belize, diabetes is one of the top five causes of death. In this regard, the Ministry of Health is focusing on improving its primary health services in an effort to help persons overcome this disease. A workshop was held today where healthcare providers were equipped with the tools to improve lives. Dr. Baxter McLendon spoke to Love news about the workshop.
Dr. Baxter McLendon: “We have two excellent doctors that have come here for the UK: one Dr. Andy Smith has a special interest in Diabetes and he talked about Diabetes in general, how to control your Diabetes and what problems you can have secondary to Diabetes if your glucose is not well controlled. We also had a podiatrist come and talk about the problems you can have with foot ulcers and peripheral arterial disease secondary to diabetes because the problem with diabetes it can cause a lot health issues, not just eyes but in poor circulation to you lower legs, renal failure. If your sugar is elevated you are more at risk of having a heart attack or a stroke.”
This month of is being observed as diabetes month under the theme “The Family and Diabetes.
