Donald Trump seeks to cut funding to ‘enemies’

2 min read

Last night the 45th President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, delivered his first State of the Union Address. In his address, President Trump spoke of his administration’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The matter was taken before the United Nations and majority of the members voted in favor of a resolution which calls for the USA to reverse its decision. Belize was one of the 128 countries that voted in favor of the United Nations resolution against the US and last night President Trump highlighted the penalties that would be placed on countries he termed ‘enemies’ of the United States.

“Last month I also took an action, endorsed unanimously by the U.S. Senate just months before. I recognized Jerusalem as the Capital of Israel. Shortly afterwards dozens of countries voted in the United Nations General Assembly against America’s sovereign right to make this decision. In 2016 American tax payers generously sent those same countries more than twenty billion dollars in aid that is why tonight I am asking Congress to pass legislation to help ensure American foreign assistance dollars always serve American interest and only go to friends of America, not enemies of America.”

Thirty five countries abstained from voting while nine others voted against the resolution.
