There was a fatal traffic incident late yesterday evening in Belmopan, Cayo District. Cayo Correspondent, Fem Cruz reports.
ACP Joseph Myvett: “Belmopan Police was called to the scene of an accident on the Hummingbird Highway just outside Belmopan near one of the round about where upon arrival a black and white Dodge pick up was seen on the right hand side of the highway which was south bound whilst a little bit in front of the vehicle was a Hispanic male that was seen on the road with apparent head and body injures. He was later identified to be Edwin Naharo Valdes 32 year old Guatemalan Laborer of Camalotte Village. From the Police’s investigation we learnt that the deceased was riding his bicycle in a northerly direction however traffic was congested. I believe that some work was being done on the Roaring Creek Bridge hence causing the congestion in traffic. As a result he swerved across the highway in order of go to the other side which resulted in him being knocked down. The driver of the of the pick up at the time was one Joseph Penner 20 years of Aqua Viva which is somewhere in the area just outside Belmopan.”
Police have Joseph Penner in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.
