The first sporting event at the Belize City Civic Center since its completion took place today. This was a friendly basketball competition between a few participating Belize City High Schools. Minister of Education, Patrick Faber explained why it was important that the first event at the Civic was for the youths.
Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister/ Minister of Education, Youth and Sports: “We wanted an opportunity to test the facilities even before there officially open; as you may have heard by now we intend to do the official opening of the Civic Center on April 30th; that is a Monday night and as all Belizeans know the Tuesday is the May 1st holiday so we are expecting a grand event on that occasion but we wanted to do two things firstly to send the signal as early as possible that we will be putting into action exactly what we’ve been saying all along that the Civic Center is not just a big building that looks good and not serve the people and so this is the first demonstration of that. As I have announced as well we will also be opening the Civic up for the teachers on teacher day when that comes up next month so as we have been saying this is a facility that will be used for by everybody and we are starting on the right foot with the young people secondary schools in this occasion.”
The event was a collaboration among Belize Infrastructure Limited, APEX Events Services- Belize Limited, Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports and Culture and the National Sports Council.
