Environmentalists are rejoicing today after Cabinet approved a proposal to reduce plastic and Styrofoam pollution. This will be done through the phasing out of single-use plastic shopping bags, Styrofoam and plastic food utensils by April 22, 2019. The Government has recognized that the phasing out of these items is a necessary pollution control measure to protect the terrestrial and marine environment from harmful plastic contamination. Hipolito Novelo reports.
The proposal was advanced through a collaborative effort from the Ministry of Fisheries, Forestry, the Environment and Sustainable Development, the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Commerce, the Ministry of Tourism, the Department of the Environment, Customs Department, Beltraide, Directorate General of Foreign Trade, and Solid Waste Management Authority.
