Santander Sugar Limited has been fined by the Government of Belize for infractions that the Export Processing Zone Committee defined following meetings earlier this month. Minister of State of Trade and Investment Tracey Panton explains.
Minister of State of Trade and Investment Tracey Panton: There were five infractions that the EPZ comity found and they applied the fine to the fullest extent of the law, they are required to settle an amount of US $9000 dollars with the government of Belize for the infractions and ofcourse they have properly been advised and warned even that if such infractions should occur in the future they run the risk of losing the EPZ certification.
Santander had also made a submission for review to have a waiver granted to supply sugar on the local market. The EPZ Committee decided that since there was no shortage of sugar in the domestic market, the company’s request was denied.
