Earlier this week, Love News reported on an issue that was affecting the villagers of San Antonio, Toledo District. The southern village had been without water for some days. The issue was brought to our attention by the Toledo West Area Representative, Oscar Requena. Today, in the sitting of the House, Requena chalked the problem up to an irresponsible water board management.

Oscar Requena, Area Representative, Toledo West: “On September 30th, that was this week to October 1st there was a major issue in San Antonio, the water was without water for the latter part of the day on September 30 and the service was not brought back until a little after midday on October the first. And Madam Speaker you would wonder why would they punish a community of over 3,000 villagers? Without water, you have two schools, you have the San Louis Ray RC School with over 300 students, you have the Seven Day Adventist High School with also over two hundred students and they did not have water. Now the moment you don’t have water you bathrooms cannot function, your school kitchens cannot function, the kids cannot have water to drink it’s a major problem, it’s a health issue Madam Speaker. And low and behold you know why the community did not have water? Because, number one back in April of this year Madam Speaker the caretaker one Simeon Coc, UDP standard bearer for Toledo West, decided to unilaterally appoint a water board chairman without formal approval from the Ministry of Rural Development. They went and they nominated, because that’s what I would say, this chairman and he ran the system April, May, June with a little input from the board. In July he decided to take it over completely and then in August at the ending of August he said you know what he’s tired he can’t handle it no more he’s resigning. As a result of that Madam Speaker not having an active chairman the pump operator decided he’s not going to pump water because he hasn’t gotten paid so he went on strike and this was confirmed Madam Speaker by both the pump operator and the handpicked nominated chairman that he resigned and he didn’t pump because he is on strike because he didn’t get paid. I say what a shame when political expediency takes precedence Madam Speaker over the welfare of the community.”

Requena said that the principal of one of the school was afraid that schools would need to be closed due to the lack of water.
