About 20 teachers of Gwen Lizarraga High School in Belize City decided to stage a ‘sit out’. The ‘sit out’ was in protest of the possibility that former UDP City Councilor Alifa Elrington will be part of the school’s board once more. Elrington previously sat on the board as a representative of the municipality as she was a city councilor. When she lost on March 7, teachers made a move to remove her from the board but she is back now and this time as the Community Representative. The teachers who ‘sat out’ this morning believe that the proper process for choosing the Community Representative was not followed. They say that the Acting Principal has the obligation to consult with the teachers before choosing the Community Representative. The teachers who staged the ‘sit out’ say that they were informed during a meeting yesterday that Elrington will sit on the board. One of the teachers Sophia Gladden spoke to Love News.
Officials of the Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) met with the teachers this morning. Luke Palacio says that the teachers’ concerns are valid and they have the full support of their union.
