The Belize Marine Fund provides grants to conservation organizations to assist them in their work of managing the country’s marine resources.

The first biennial regional conference of the Belize Marine Fund is being held at the Biltmore Plaza. The Belize Marine Fund provides grants to conservation organizations to assist them in their work of managing the country’s marine resources. Angeline Valentine-Enriquez, the Project Officer of Belize Marine Fund, spoke about the work that the organization helps to advance.

Angeline Valentine-Enriquez, Project Officer, Belize Marine Fund: “It’s our first biannual meeting and it’s meant to provide our grantees and our partners an opportunity to share some of the successes that they’ve had so far through the support that they’ve gotten through the Belize Marine Fund and also to provide us an opportunity to discuss some of the lessons learned, some of the challenges and the way forward as we continue to address these high priority marine resources management issues and we need to ensure that our ecosystems are functioning properly, ensuring that we continue to get the ecosystem services that they provide. So for example fisheries, shoreline protection through looking at the conservation of mangroves. Like I mentioned mangroves help to provide shoreline protection in terms of storms, in terms of hurricanes they help to buffer the coast and decrease wave action.”

The Belize Marine Fund falls under the Mesoamerica Reef Fund.
