A student of San Ignacio, Cayo District has reportedly passed away due to dengue. The 14-year-old died yesterday morning and, according to Doctor Marvin Manzanero, the Director of Health Services, the results of the postmortem should reveal if there were other factors involved in her death. He also stated that the community needs to work along with the Ministry of Health to combat dengue.

Dr.Marvin Manzanero, Director of Health Services: “I am aware that there is a patient that died, I think she’s a female I think she’s 14-years-old. The preliminary report I had gotten was that she had a positive dengue test in the system but I don’t have the particulars of what other issues she may have had and I believe she was in the system for less than fourteen hours before she died at Karl Heusner. So what we do in those particular cases when there is any suspicious death, not because it’s dengue but because of her rapid progression from where she made contact to the system to where she died, is we will launch an investigation. So that investigation is being done at San Ignacio first, Belmopan simultaneously and then Karl Heusner to find out what exactly happened so I’m not so sure if there was any other precondition that could have taken her to where she arrived and deteriorated very quickly I’m not so sure about that. Dengue itself could have- because I don’t know how long she was ill before she made contact with the system, if she was auto medicating I don’t have any of those particulars that’s going to come up in the investigation. I think the result should be out maybe by the end of the day and I don’t know if the autopsy is still being considered. We would need to map where she was because the first thing people will say ‘well go spray the college she was.’ but that doesn’t mean that that’s where she got it, she might not have been infected at the time she was actually in school so that is part of the mapping exercise. Yeah so actually when there is a dengue case identified it’s not only that one home that they will go to, they will do the mapping of the entire area and look for potential cases and if spraying is needed that is done. So as I said of course we won’t be able to spray every single community that you would want and every single street so we try to engage the community to make sure that they are active and working along with us. People will die of dengue, people should not be dying of dengue which is not the same thing but I think it’s the same message. I know people have been telling us ‘well you are not spraying enough.’ but I mean I’m not sure how much we are doing as a community in ensuring that we are doing our part in ensuring that we don’t have to- I mean spraying is never going to be enough and spraying is also not going to be the answer also for dengue. We have had to go twice for supplementary budgets in terms of securing insecticides, repellents, bed nets and hiring people part time to go and help with the spraying.”

Four persons have reportedly died of dengue this year.
