A man drowned over the weekend in Belize City. The police say that they don’t believe it was caused by foul play. Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alejandro Cowo says the homeless man, Manuel Mendoza was an alcoholic.
ASP Alejandro Cowo: “Police responded to a body seen floating by the river on the Swing Bridge, as a result Police requested the assistance of the Belize Coast Guard where the body of a male person was retrieved from the river who was identified as Manuel Mendoza. Other particulars are known at this time. The body was taken out of the river and it was inspected and there was no foul play was suspected. We understand that he is a person that does not have fix address and most of the time he was living under the bridge or by the commercial center. Yes we do believe there was no sign of injuries on the body, what we suspect was that he was an alcoholic and it was one of those persons that normally you see right by the commercial center.”
The postmortem examination is scheduled for Tuesday. Mendoza was originally from San Pedro but left the island for the streets of Belize City many years ago.
