The BTL Loan debate also featured a back and forth between Collet Area Representative Patrick Faber and Fort George Area Representative, Said Musa. The men argued over Voice over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and Michael Ashcroft. Faber argued that before BTL was nationalized, VOIP was not available in Belize because Ashcroft, who Musa says he fought, did not allow it.

PATRICK FABER, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER

“There were software applications back then Oovoo, you know about Oovoo that was in existence ten years ago when there was not the permission for us to use VOIP. So if you know your argument is Snapchat, Viber, WhatsApp, Facebook all of that is new. Well you check back to Oovoo you check back to Skype that has been existing long before VoIP was freed up In Belize but they Madam Speaker under their watch insisted on keeping that package preserved in order to allow Ashcroft to make money and creep the Belizean people. They did not want to open things up Madam Speaker because that would have handicapped the profits of BTL and if the man doesn’t make his fifteen percent because of the agreement that my friend from Fort George and his Attorney General from Freetown made then they would have come for the tax paying dollars and that would have exposed him because he did not tell he, Belizean people, that he signed that accommodation agreement being the secretive greedy way of operating which he engaged in.”

SAID MUSA, AREA REP., FORT GEORGE

“Whatever I did I always acknowledge my commitments. Secondly, the whole thing about BTL and the problems we had it is because I was fighting Michael Ashcroft not giving into him.”

LAURA TUCKER-LONGSWORTH, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

“Honorable Deputy Prime Minister proceed but kindly bring it closer to the Bill that’s being.”

PATRICK FABER, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER

“Madam Speaker what is his point of honor; we are talking about why this borrowing is important and they were the ones who spoke about the mismanagement of the company when that is not the case. He was fighting Michael Ashcroft? He was fighting Michael Ashcroft. Madam Speaker?”
