International Hypertension Day: “Know your numbers”

Belize has a small population compared to the other Caribbean and Latin American countries, so two hundred hypertension-related deaths is considered a very high number. The Ministry of Health is doing what it can to reduce that figure and today it targeted food vendors in Belize City as part of World Hypertension Day. This year’s theme is “Know your numbers” and the goal is to increase awareness of the dangers of high blood pressure and ways to prevent it. The Ministry partnered with PAHO to carry out a forum with local chefs to promote the reduction of sodium and salt in the preparation of food. Chief Nutritionist for the Minister of Health, Robin Daly spoke to the media.

World Hypertension Day has been celebrated annually since 2005
