On Friday there was more than one fiery exchange by members of both major political parties. When debating the BTL Loan, Leader of the Opposition John Briceno who has interest in BTL’s competition, SMART, said that the telecommunication giant needs to apologize for a sexist advertisement. Briceno was referring to a flyer posted on ‘Digicell Belize’ Facebook page

JOHN BRICENO, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

“We really need to call BTL’s attention with these sexist ads where they use women as sexual tools to be able to sell their product. Madam Speaker here I have the latest ad; I have to say this 99cents quickie and they have a woman holding up the sign; Madam Speaker that is sexist and I demand that BTL pulls this Ad immediately and that the management of BTL apologizes to the women of this country Madam Speaker.”

PATRICK FABER, DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER

“As a point of order Madam Speaker; the member may well have a right to make that case in his private role as a co-owner of smart. You know using your office; I am not defending BTL Madam Speaker it may well be a good criticism but Madam Speaker further more they we all over me when they thought I was throwing away. What does BTL commercial have to do with the loan motion?”

LAURA TUCKER-LONGSWORTH, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

“That is the point of order here. Excuse me opposition leader I really take issue with the introduction at this point; you are mixing up the issues; please finish your presentation and continue with the debate.”

JOHN BRICENO, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

“This company according to the Prime Minister belongs to all of us and it belongs to the Belizean people the Belizean people should not allow them to.”

LAURA TUCKER-LONGSWORTH, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE

“Are you going to allow me to speak? Sit down and hear what I have to say please. Kindly have a seat Opposition Leader. Can you kindly proceed without introducing that; can you just move along, please? Thank you very much”

JOHN BRICENO, LEADER OF THE OPPOSITION

“You allow great gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister and now you muzzle us Madam Speaker but we’ll deal with that later.”
