At today’s Meet & Greet, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams informed the media that eighteen-year-old Jordan Burns, has been re-captured. Burns was charged with the murder of 34-year-old-Carlton Moreira, which occurred last Wednesday in an alley between Lakeview and Mayflower Street.
Chester Williams – Deputy Commissioner of Police: “Yes Mr. Burns was recaptured this morning and he is expected or may have already appeared in court this afternoon. Charged with one count of murder and one count of escape and again we continue to go after persons aggressively when we know persons are out there who have committed a crime, it is our duty to investigate and do our utmost best to bring them to justice and we have been very stern on that. We believe that the quicker we work on these cases the better it is and the quick work of the Police have always yielded good results and we want to assure the Belizean people that as the Police Department we will continue to do our utmost best to ensure that these crimes do not occur but when they do occur that we can solve them with their support and the public have been very generous to the Police in terms of as assisting us with information and statements with a view to make arrest in these cases and we want to ensure that, that support goes right through the trails so that we can get convictions at the end of the day.”
Today, Burns appeared before Senior Magistrate Aretha Ford, where he was read the charge. He was additionally charged with attempted robbery, conspiracy to commit robbery and escape from lawful custody. Senior Magistrate Ford told him that she will not take a plea since the offence of murder is indictable. She also informed him that she cannot offer him bail because of the nature of the offence. She remanded him into custody until August 15.
