Twenty-two year old Joshua Smith, a Call Center employee, was charged with robbery when he appeared today before the Chief Magistrate, Sharon Fraser. Smith pled not guilty to the charge. He said that he was with his girlfriend and their two sons when the robbery occurred. Chief Magistrate Fraser explained to him that she cannot offer him bail because the offence was committed with a firearm. She remanded him into custody until March 16. The incident occurred on Sunday, January 28 at New Fortune Restaurant, located at the corner of East Collet Canal Street and King Street. Chinese businessman Xin Hui Zhang, reported to the police that he was at the restaurant when a man entered and held him up at gunpoint and stole eight hundred dollars and two I-phones. Police reported that they viewed a surveillance camera at the restaurant and they recognized Smith as the person who committed the robbery. They said they apprehended him shortly afterwards and he was wearing the same clothes as the person they saw on the video camera. Smith said they mistook him for another person and the police beat him and refused to take him to the hospital for an examination.
