Kortobacco Limited, a distributor of cigarettes, located inside the Western Free Zone was a victim of a major heist, when over four hundred six thousand dollars US dollars were stolen on Sunday. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvett, shared the details.
ACP Joseph Myvette, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “According to police information the security guards discovered the damages to the building shortly before 4:30 am. Two security guards were working from HEZ Security Company and according to them at the time they were somewhere inside the zone at a gas station. Police have interviewed several persons in connection with this investigation. Surveillance footage had also showed that four persons entered the building who were masked and wearing long-sleeved shirts and gloves whilst one person remained outside during the commission of the burglary. Yes, I believe they were armed with short arms.”
According to Myvett, police are currently looking at the option of the robbery being an inside job.
ACP Joseph Myvette, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “Well that is also being looked at as one employee is being interviewed in relation to the investigation. The employee works within the building but is not a security guard.”
Myvett said the police department is looking into the possibility that the culprits could have come from across the border.
ACP Joseph Myvette, National Crimes Investigation Branch: “We do not know because we were not even able to see the complexion based on the masked that these persons were wearing but yes we have been having discussions with the Guatemalan authorities in regards to this burglary as well.”
Police are currently following several leads and the department will receive assistance from the Financial Intelligence Unit.
