Western Regional Commander of the Belize Police Department, Senior Superintendent Andrew Ramirez has issued an official report on the double homicide uncovered yesterday on a road off the George Price Highway between the towns of San Ignacio and Benque Viejo del Carmen, Cayo District. Police were alerted of the two male bodies in the area at around two o’clock on Thursday afternoon. Upon arrival, investigators found the two Hispanic men lying faced-down on a farm road about three hundred feet off the main road. Lead investigator in this case, Sergeant Jaime Gonzalez spoke on what investigations have revealed so far.
At the scene, investigators found three expended nine millimetre Luger brand shells as well as a broken identification card bearing the name, Santos Ramon Gonzalez Gomez, a 52-year-old Guatemalan national of Melchor de Mencos, Peten. After further investigations, the other victim was identified as 37-year-old, Antonio Garcia Calletel also of Melchor de Mencos, Peten. In addition to the expended shells found at the scene, the Scenes of Crime technician also found a 25 kilogram scale, four nine millimetre expended shells two slugs. Police have described this incident as being execution style murders due to how the bodies were positioned at the scene. It is believed to be drug related; just last month San Ignacio Police had made a drug bust in the same area where they had confiscated over one hundred kilos of marijuana. According to the Commanding Officer of San Ignacio Police, Superintendent Richard Rosado, this area is known to be used by those in the drug trade when moving their products from Guatemala into Belize.
