NEW COMMANDING OFFICER TAKING ACTION IN DANGRIGA Jun 19, 2012

 

A crime wave has been enveloping Belize City and has been extending to the various districts.  In Dangriga, a new commanding officer of the police department is looking to fight crime and make the district a better place.  Correspondent Harry Arzu reports

“Sr. Supt. of Police, Robert Mariano, is the new officer commanding the Belize Police Department here in this municipality and to extension Stann Creek District.  Already his presence is being felt.  Conversely, Sr. Supt. Mariano explained his intention to help prevent and reduce crime in an effort to enhance the quality of life for the people of Dangriga as well and the rural communities.  He explains.

 

ROBERT MARIANO, Senior Superintendent of Police

“Since the 11th June, 2012 I took over command of the Stann Creek Police District. I’m also the commander for the Southern formation.  Since taking over this formation I have conducted several meetings within the Stann Creek District and Dangriga Town.  I have since conducted meetings with about twenty five persons from the foreshow area Dangriga Town neighbourhood watch who discuss the matter of robberies in the foreshow areas.  Since then two police officers had been posted in the foreshow area to assist people in that area.  I also had a public meeting at Dangriga Town Police Station, about one hundred persons attended, where I discussed the community oriented policing and multi- agent approach in the District to reduce crime.  Meeting was also held at Hopkins Village in the Stann Creek District, about sixty village members attended, matter discussed was the crime situation within the village and how the head station can give support to the police within the village.  Meeting was also held with my senior staff of the Stann Creek Police District while a separate was held with the junior staff.  Strategy, police respect and cooperation with the community and other agents was discussed.  Meeting was also held with Principals of various kinder and primary schools.   Discuss was police support for the schools to prevent vandalism at the schools, since then police have been visiting the different schools during and after school hours.”

“Today the department will hold a meeting to form a coalition in an effort to fight crimes.  Sr. Supt. Mariano is also the president of the National Garifuna Council.”

“At the same time it is important for me to use the National Garifuna Council to give support in the work that I do and therefore I will be conducting clinics at the Papalambi Building on Thursdays between the hours from 1:30 to 5 PM.  Persons wishing to see me will be able to do so on Thursdays of every week.”
