Wednesday, June 27--------------------------MAN SENTENCE FOR CHILD ABUSE Jun 27, 2012

A number of concerned residents from Santa Familia Village in the Cayo District, called Love News this morning to express their outrage in the sentencing of a man whom they believe was just trying to discipline his child.  However it seems the man might have gone a little bit overboard.  Correspondent Elaine Berry reports on this and other matters brought before the court

“Today thirty four year old Felix of a Santa Familia address and a Belizean labourer was sentenced to three months imprisonment for harm to a five years old.  The minor was beaten with a stick that caused bruises to both sides of his face and both arms and injuries to his upper body.  Personnel from the Human Services and the teachers noticed it was not the first time he was beaten in that manner.  The court stated there is no wrong in disciplining a child, but it should not be done in a manner that will put the child at risk for serious injuries especially to a five years old.  In other news, Christian Neal, twenty two years unemployed in Santa Elena was today fined ten thousand dollars or in default three years for drug trafficking.  In December 10th, 2012 at about 8:30 PM while riding his bicycle heading in the direction of Benque Viejo Town and upon arrival in front of Eden Guest House he threw a black plastic bag on the highway.  Police retrieved the bag and arrested Neal, took him to the police station along with the bag which contained green leafy substances.  It was weighed in front of Neal and the weight was 489 grams.  The matter was prosecuted by San Ignacio Prosecutor, George Gomes.  This report is being sponsored by Maya Walk and Tours, the full Belizean experience.  Local food and adventure tours.  Reporting for Love News, Elaine Berry, San Ignacio.”
