Heart disease is considered the number one killer in the world.  And if statistics are correct, the majority of people who suffer from acute heart disease live in areas not considered to be first-world countries.  Now in Belize, people who suffer from heart disease who may in the future need open heart surgery will be able to access this procedure.  Today the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital held a press conference to announce that this week, with the assistance of a team of visiting specialists, it performed its first set of open heart surgeries on patients who ordinarily would have perished if left untreated.  We’ll have full details on this new procedure in our six o’ clock news report.
