Rotary Club of Belize Prepares for Weekend Play Aug 02, 2012

The Rotary Club of Belize will be presenting a Jamaican play at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts tomorrow.  The purpose of the play is not only to entertain, but also to raise funds to aid the Rotary in their yearly projects.  Love News spoke with the secretary of the Rotary Club of Belize Sandra MacKay who told us more about the play.

SANDRA McKAY

Secretary

Rotary Club of Belize

“The play is called, Children Children; it’s written by Joan Andrea Hutchinson and they have permitted us to perform it once again.  We did it initially around 2004/2005 thereabout, in Belize, that was the first production where Rotarians were involved.  We are seeking to repeat it again and of course, the proceeds are for our various service projects that the Rotary is engaged in.  Children Children is about children back in the Common Entrance days.  So they are in Standard six preparing for their common entrance and of course you see the various kind of characters in the classroom; the children who are well behaved, those who are not so well behaved; you’ll see the book-worms and  === and the various characters it will be very funny to see us, Rotarians, business people in the community acting out those jokes.  It is a musical comedy and so there’s a number of musical pieces and lots of laughter involved.”

“Why did you decide to bring this back as opposed to having another play done?”

SANDRA McKAY

Secretary

Rotary Club of Belize

“Well I have to say by popular demand because all through the years, I believe maybe it’s because it was the first as we did as Rotarians on stage, the public kept asking us to bring that one back again, to repeat it.  So finally we decided it’s long overdue for us to repeat that one and that’s why we decided to do that one this year.”

“Who are the actors?”

“We have our President, Maria Coye – she is acting as one of the students; myself as well.  We have Melissa Shaguray, who is a Rotarian, acting as a student as well.  We have Lyn Young, he was the CEO of BEL prior, he is acting as a student and Baby Jesus in our Christmas Pageant.  We have Ernesto Vasquez, Kalifiah McKay, Evelyn Sanchez from Rotary Sunrise,  Lloydia Johnson, Jose Ketz from Rotary Sunrise as well, Mary Martin, one of our Rotarians and Major Robateau who is the previous Major of the Salvation Army.”

“One of our projects is the Gift of Life Project which is funding we use to send children with congenital heart disease to institutions/hospitals in the US.  We do that because these kids, we make the connection for them so they can be housed and one parent usually goes along so we give them airfare and pocket change as well.  The other one is Dorothy Menzies Home for the children – that is an on-going project.  Right now we are moving to phase three of refurbishing of that home.  It was built originally for 24 kids and it now houses over 66 children, so we are working on that too.  We do a feeding program with three schools in the City – we feed children at lunchtime.  We do a lot of filtration systems where we go into the rural and we offer people an alternative to dirty water so we have filtered their water so they can have clean drinking water.  We build homes for needy family or a needy person.  We just did one a couple months ago so we looking forward to doing another one this year.  We have several other projects coming on stream. We’re asking the public to support us because our projects are all community based and they are all for the good of either family or individuals or sick person or needy person.”

The play will commence tomorrow at 7:30pm.  It will continue to show throughout the week on Friday and on Sunday at the same time.  Tickets can be purchased at Mala’s on New Road, at the Bliss Center or from any Rotarian at fifteen dollars for regular tickets, thirty dollars reserved and fifty dollars for premium tickets.
