Over 100 Pounds of Cocaine Found in Belize's Waters
Aug 31, 2012
A large amount of cocaine was found floating in Belize’s territorial waters on Wednesday morning. According to reports, the drugs weighing in at just over a hundred and four pounds, was found in multiple packets near the Turneffe Atoll and has since been turned over to the police. But the investigation continues as it is believed that more cocaine may be floating around in Belize’s territorial waters. Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of National Security, retired Colonel George Lovell today appealed to anyone with information that could assist law enforcement authorities in their investigation to come forward.

“The cocaine was brought in by the Coast Guard and it was handed over to the Belize Police Department; they are conducting their investigations. We have in fact sent additional patrols back out in the area to keep combing the area and maintain a presence. It is an ongoing investigation, we have no leads that can lead to any arrest at this time and the Police are the ones that are conducting those investigations.”

“Colonel Lovell, do you believe that this is what they call a ‘wet drop’ and that more drugs might be out there floating around?”
GEORGE LOVELL
Chief Executive Officer
Ministry of National Security
“Quite possible but I wouldn’t want speculate as to how that bail came up; it’s in the sea and I do know that from time to time you do have the so called, wet drops but I cannot confirm that this particular one came from a wet drop. I assume it is.”

“This one is with an estimated street value of a million dollars, this is a significant find.”
GEORGE LOVELL
Chief Executive Officer
Ministry of National Security
“Yes, it is and I am hoping if there’s any information that anyone would have of any others that may be floating or know of anyone who have recovered any of these things for them to be able to get to the Police Department and let them know precisely, so they can in fact secure these things and destroy them or bring to justice those who are responsible.”

“I know you said that no evidence has come to the Police or the Coast Guard so far indicating that there’s more but as I alluded to before these things don’t just happen in isolation; maybe that one was just placed there for you all to find and a larger shipment is somewhere.”
GEORGE LOVELL
Chief Executive Officer
Ministry of National Security
“Could be, Patrick – there’s a whole lot of things that could be happening and that is the reason why we have our people out there trying to confirm or deny some of the assumptions that we have and some of the allegations that are currently being made.”

“Will today’s donation assist the Coast Guard and the BDF?”
GEORGE LOVELL
Chief Executive Officer
Ministry of National Security
“Certainly, this is what it’s all about – for us to build the capacity to be out there, to be more effective in our patrolling efforts in combating these stress that confronts us.”
Love News understands that samples of the drugs have been secured and that the process has begun to get the necessary clearance to have the cocaine find destroyed.
