BDF Truck Overturns and Injures Several Soldiers Aug 31, 2012

A number of Belize Defense Force soldiers were hurt when the truck they were traveling in overturned last night in the Cayo district.  The incident happened around midnight on the Chiquibul road in the Mountain Pine Ridge area. Love News spoke with the Commander of the BDF Brigadier General Dario Tapia about the incident.

“At around midnight last night I received a call of one of our trucks turning over in the Chiquibul Road, which is the road that leads to the Mountain Pine Ridge at the entrance of  the Chiquibul Forest Reserve, in that vicinity.  The information I received was that the truck turned over, we had several injuries, no death – thankfully.  The truck was returning with troops coming out of Rio Blanco, bringing them out, two camps after being out in Rio Blanco for two weeks or so.  The injuries as I understand it – one individual got a broken leg and the remainder were minor injuries from I understand it.  The minors from what I understood, they have been treated and released and the soldier who had the broken leg is currently at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.  I wouldn’t want to name that officer because I’m not sure if his relatives have been informed and I wouldn’t want to cause any alarm.  This does not affect the BDF patrol in that area any at all.  This is not the first time that an accident has occurred there with our vehicles.  Fortunately this time we didn’t have any deaths.  I believe the soldiers had minor injuries, they will recover well – they were coming out from being away for two weeks; when they come out for that prolonged period, they get five days off to their families so if it’s minor they should be back to work in those five days and if there is any medical condition that do not allow them to go there then certainly someone else will fill in the shoe to allow them to recover well.”

Brigadier General Tapia says about ten individuals were inside the truck when it overturned.
