This year, 47 men and women sat the Regional Exam for Nurse Registration which is administered by the Caribbean Examination Council, CXC. The students who successfully completed the exams are from the University of Belize. Hipolito Novelo reports.

Eight years ago, Bonaventure Nwangwu traveled to Belize from Nigeria.

“When I came to Belize I really had the desire to help people and I have always wondered how I could be of help to others.”

“After working for a couple of years, Nwangwu decided to be a nurse. He began taking courses at the University of Belize while working as a security guard. The sleepless nights have paid off as Nwangwu achieved the highest score in Belize for the Regional Exam for Nurse Registration.”

“I feel overwhelmed with the job. When this year was starting I asked God for a good year and he gave me a remarkable year.”

“Nwangwu graduated from his course with the highest grade point average. Last week he obtained Belizean nationality and says his goal is to work at the KHMH.”

“The exam which Nwangwu sat was administered by the Caribbean Examination Council, CXC. 47 men and women sat the exam. Out of that number, 37 are UB students.”

Leolin Castillo, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, UB

“Looking at it from a holistic picture we are saying that 24 out of the 37 students from the University of Belize passed that exam which is 65%. It is interesting to note that all of the passes for the country of Belize came from the national university, the University of Belize.”

“As of October 2014, with consent from CARICOM Countries, the CXC took over the Regional Exam for Nurse Registration. Anyone who wants to practice nursing in CARICOM Countries must successfully take the examination.”
