There were four murders over the long Easter weekend. We have details of all four murders and tonight we begin with the first. 40 year old Manuel Canales was stabbed on Holy Thursday by a man who he thought was his friend. He died hours later on Good Friday while receiving treatment at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital. Police have arrested and charged Evyin Ardon for Canales’s murder. Hipolito Novelo reports.
Police believe that it was twenty two year old Evyin Ardon who fatally stabbed 40 year old Manuel Canales. Canales was attacked at around ten o’clock on March 29, Holy Thursday, while he was on his way home on Antelope Street Extension in Belize City.
Insp. Wilfred Ferrufino, CIB, Belize City: “Investigations reveal that he was walking on Antelope Street in the company of another male person when he was approached by an individual who inflicted the injury on him.”
Canales was stabbed once to the abdomen. He was rushed to the KHMH but a few hours later, on the morning of Good Friday, he died. Police arrested Ardon on Saturday March 31. He appeared before Chief Magistrate, Sharon Fraser this morning. No plea was taken because the offence is of an indictable nature. Inspector Wilfred Ferrufino said that a murder weapon has not been recovered. Investigators are relying heavily on that single eyewitness who was present during the fatal attack.
Canales leaves behind four children, two of which are stepsons. Wilfred Blanco says that news of his stepfather’s murder was unexpected.
Wilfred Blanco, Stepson of Murder Victim: The man that stabbed him was his work man for a long time and they met up and after that I don’t know what happened.
Reporter: Did your step father ever mention that he had problems with this gentleman?
Wilfred Blanco, Stepson of Murder Victim: Never. My stepfather was a cool person, always laughing and playing around. He never had a problem with anyone, he was from home to work but them we were never involved in a problem like that.
And now the grieving family is left wondering why anyone would want to kill their loved one.
Wilfred Blanco, Stepson of Murder Victim:We didn’t expect it. We had some plans to go to the river to spend some time and he already bought everything we were to take and we couldn’t go because that happened.
Reporter: How long did your father and his alleged attacker work together?
Wilfred Blanco, Stepson of Murder Victim:To be real about a couple weeks but that was long time ago, he used to come here and work at our house a long long time ago.
Ardon was not offered bail due to the nature of the offence. He is behind bars until his next court date on May 29.
Canales is originally from Honduras. He migrated to Belize in 1997 and later received his Belizean nationality certificate.
