Men claimed to be Victims of Human Trafficking

The investigation continues in the case against 23-year-old Keyur Barot, who is accused of making off with sixty thousand dollars and an SUV both belonging to his boss Jack Charles. That reportedly happened back in September. Later in October, Barot and another former employee of Charles, 29-year-old  Jitendra Kumar were intercepted and returned to Belize along with 13 thousand US dollars. To date, police are still to levy charges for the above-mentioned crimes. Today ASP Cowo explained what has been the delay.

ASP Alejandro Cowo – CIB

“It’s a matter that the police began with a theft investigation initially, they were brought from Mexico to Belize where police interviewed them however it’s a collaboration effort between the police department and the immigration department so we are looking at two different aspects of investigation so the immigration department is still dealing with that immigration aspect and then after they finish they will be passing it onto the police so that the police can continue with the theft investigation.”

“Are these men in custody until then?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo – CIB

“They are still here in Belize not in custody.”

“Are they being – I understand they are being held, put up by the Department of Human Development as persons who complained that they were victims of human trafficking.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo – CIB

“The matter is being dealt with the immigration department along with human services.”

“Okay these men have been back in the country from October 1st, is there a timeline or a window for when you can say ‘okay there is a criminal complaint of a substantial nature theft of $60,000 and a vehicle against you.’ the window for the human trafficking complaint expired and we have to bring criminal charges.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo – CIB

“Well there’s no expiration date on those charges can be brought at any time, it is an indictable matter so it is left open indefinitely.”
