In May, an assessment of the Macal River was done to test for methyl mercury.  John Bodden, the lead Public Health Inspector, said that the results from the assessment showed that methyl mercury was found at elevated levels in only two kinds of fish, one of which was bay snook.

John Bodden, Public Health Inspector, Ministry of Health: “What we’re talking about is methyl mercury mercury that is in fish tissue, that is not the regular mercury that you’d find distributed in the water column and we will be distributing a press release in that regard but what I can tell you from the preliminary assessment is that results are relatively good because of the 18 different fish species that we sampled only two of them are at elevated stage.”

Bodden added that the river is tested once a year.
