Meanwhile, the Foreign Minister says that he is not aware of the murder of 32-year-old Belizean Samuel Sosa who was killed on the night of February 12 in Melchor de Mencos. He says however that if his Ministry needs to intervene, it will.
Wilfred Elrington – Minister of Foreign Affairs
“It’s new to me. I haven’t heard of it so I can tell you that if it’s a matter that has anything to do with the Ministry of Home Affairs or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs it will ultimately reach me and is going to be dealt with properly. If we can in fact do anything about it I’m sure we will. We have had occasion recently to help Belizeans in Mexico who had run into problems with them, very successfully, we have a very nice network of Honorary Consuls, Ambassadors and we handle these matters almost routinely. We work with people in Nicaragua, people in Mexico, Guatemala so it will only be a matter of time. I’m not aware of it because I don’t know everything that goes on immediately but certainly if it comes to our Ministry and we have anything to do with it we will look into it properly.”
Guatemalan authorities have detained a woman, Mayra Verónica Aldana who they believe was an accomplice to the man suspected of killing Sosa. She was intercepted in a white Toyota car after a witness to the murder identified her in the company of a man who is known as ‘El Gordo’. Sosa was known to be a football player in his hometown Benque Viejo del Carmen Town.
