Murderer runs into Police Officer after Stabbing Carlitos Valdez

While no one was miraculously injured by the fire, there was still violence on the island. A man from Benque Viejo Del Carmen lost his life on Ambergris Caye.  50 year old Carlitos Omer Valdez was a contractor who painted houses on the island.  Valdez was staying in a room upstairs of the White Horse Sports bar.  As he was being viciously stabbed, a police constable who was in another room, heard the blood curdling cries and ran into the hallway and came face to face with the knife wielding suspect, Gilbert Anthony Chanek. The police department says Chanek has been charged with Valdez’s murder.

Supt. Reymundo Reyes Officer Commanding San Pedro: The responding officer is a person who as a room at the upstairs part for the building and as I mention it was when they heard the scream that he ran out and that is the same time when he saw the suspect trying to flee from inside the building so he was confronted, subdued and destined until we arrive.

ASP Alejandro Cowo: Police constable Mr. Campus who resides in the same apartment building was in side of his room along with his wife when he heard a commotion coming out from one of the rooms of the apartment. As a result; as he steped out of his room he observe a male person running out from Mr. Valdez room holding a knife and observed that what he had suspected blood on his shirt. He made and attempt to subdue this person; however he was approached by the male person with knife and after a little struggle he managed to disarm the man and subdue him. There after he visited the room and that’s where he found Mr. Valdez apparently motionless with several apparent stab wounds to the chest and stomach area.

Jose Sanchez: First question was the officer in uniform or was in plain clothes at the time.

ASP Alejandro Cowo: He was at his house in plain clothes.

Jose Sanchez: Is there any motive as yet as to the dispute between the suspect?

Asp Alejandro Cowo: We cannot exactly tell you if it was dispute. There was a commotion; people speaking at a loud tone of voice and that is what caused the officers attention.

Jose Sanchez: Were you able to determine if the weapon; the knife was already in the apartment or was it something the suspect brought with him.

ASP Alejandro Cowo: That is something that we do not know yet.

Jose Sanchez: But no motive as yet?

ASP Alejandro Cowo: NO motive as yet; we know that one of the family members of the suspect who was Mr. Gilbert Antonio Chancek resides as that same building and he was visiting that same family member there.

Jose Sancehz: How many stab wounds?

ASP Alejandro Cowo: He had several stab wounds to the chest and to the stomach area. What we know is that yes they know each other for a long time and that he has been frequenting that same location there for over two years because a family member resides at that location along with Mr. Valdez. Not in the same room but in the other house of apartment.

Reporter: Okay and they alleged suspect; you said they had blood on his shirt.

ASP Alejandro Cowo: Yes he had a shirt and a pants.

Reporter: Okay.

Female Reporter: Sir were any of these men; either of them under the influence of alcohol at the time; do you know?

Asp Alejandro Cowo: No; based on that Sunday San Pedro police arrested and charged Mr. Gilbert Anthonio Chanek 23 years old for that crime of murder.

Reporter: Might it be a crime of passion?

ASP Alejandro Cowo: I don’t think so; there is no indication to or anything in the investigation that is leading to that so no; none at all.

Gilbert Anthony Chanek does not have a criminal record. And though some family members of the deceased claim Chanek has a violent past or even a mental disability, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Alejandro Cowo says they don’t have any evidence to support that claim.
