National Defence Minister vs BNTU National President

2 min read

As a response to its new crime-fighting strategy in the wake of a spate of crime over the weekend, the Government of Belize decided to consolidate the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Home Affairs and re-create the Ministry of National Security. That Ministry is being headed by John Saldivar, the Area Representative of Belmopan. The Belize National Teachers Union is not happy with the shift, as Saldivar is concern. BNTU National President Senator Elena Smith has condemned the Government’s move. Yesterday, via is facebook page, Minister Saldivar responded to Smith’s criticism saying quote “Elena Smith you are way out of line. You have absolutely no evidence or right to be referring to me in the manner in which you did. You are using your position as President of the BNTU as a bully pulpit because you know the power of the teachers.” End of quote. Today, Smith says she isn’t fazed by Saldivar’s comments which the Leader of the PUP, John Briceno, has condemned.

The Police portfolio was removed from Saldivar in 2016 after various reports surfaced that Saldivar shared an association with William Danny Mason, the man believed to have been the mastermind of the beheading of Pastor Llewellyn Lucas
