Climate change is any significant long-term change in the expected patterns of average weather of a region or the whole Earth over a significant period of time. Global warming is the long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth’s climate system. Love News reporter tells us how we can make improvements to our lifestyle in our household to reduce the global warming effects.

Climate change is a growing issue impacting all countries around the globe. Two decades ago, climate change was a small blip on everyone’s radar. Today countries, companies and organizations around the world are taking the initiative to mitigate the effects of climate change and restore the earth to it’s healthy self. Here in Belize many organizations meet to talk about how they can help put a stop to climate change. Just this week the Caribbean Climate Change Community Center met to discuss how we can use our natural resources to mitigate the impacts from climate change. This year alone Belize was heavily impacted by a drought that impacted the livelihood of farmers greatly. Some farmers reported a loss of about 50% of their crops as compared to last year. The drought also brought serious problems with the new river where advanced eutrophication had taken place. According to program officer of SWEDBIO Tristan Tyrell, the planting of trees could have helped with the drought situation even if the help was small.

Tristan Tyrell, Program Officer, SwedBio: “Looking at how nature can help for instance with rainfall patterns so by reforesting particular areas you’re encouraging rain to fall but you’re also encouraging the retention of water in those areas so when it comes to drought events such as what’s happened that there are water resources available and hopefully help to relieve some of the pressures from that drought.”

This fight against climate change however isn’t just for organizations and the government but for citizens like ourselves, we can also help fight this battle. We can achieve this by reducing our carbon footprint which is the amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted by a single person. Simple things like planting trees in your backyard or building a house around a tree instead of cutting it down can go a long way. Don’t burn garbage or grass in your backyard as the smoke and gasses contribute heavily to climate change. Reducing the amount of electricity you use at home can also reduce your carbon footprint, recycle and reduce the amount of plastics that you use daily – these are all small things that we can do in our households to help mitigate the effects of climate change. If you want to do more to help this fight there are tons of organizations that are trying to restore a healthy earth. If we don’t start changing the way we live things will only get worse for us.
