In light of the recent death of a young child, David Morrison, the National Committee for Families and Children (NCFC) issued a press release expressing grave concern over the increase of violence that continues to plague our society. The release made reference to article 19 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) where it states “children have the right to be protected from being hurt and mistreated in body or mind”.  NCFC said that these incidences of violence have not only caused grief and disruption for the families affected but have also had a serious negative effect on all Belizean families.  The release added that the NCFC will continue to advocate for improved conditions for families in order that they can protect and maintain their members. The NCFC noted that the killing of the youths occurs almost on a daily basis. Therefore, it calls on government, churches, and civil society organizations to intensify their efforts in assisting to reduce the levels of violence that are occurring in our communities. Further, it urges individuals, families, and communities to work collectively to strengthen the culture of peace and tolerance. The release ended by stating that the NCFC believes that families are the very heart and foundation of our society, therefore, they must be protected, nurtured and preserved.
