Last month US President, Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. In this regard, he made the decision to move the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Thereafter, the United Nations General Assembly convened a meeting of its member-states where 128 countries including Belize voted against the US decision. The UN’s resolution stated to the effect that any steps taken to alter the position of Jerusalem is invalid and has no legal grounds further it should be withdrawn. Today, the National Evangelical Association of Belize sent out a press release expressing disappointment over the Government of Belize’s position. Love News spoke with President of the NEAB, Pastor Lance Lewis.
Pastor Lance Lewis – President of NEAB
“Jerusalem has always been the capital, you know the historical center of Israel, always been and the fact that America has now lined up with moving the embassy. It is a historical move based on history; we as Christians, for the most part, have that same sentiment that Jerusalem is undivided. There have been people that have different issues and we are concerned about their issues yet but the matter of the capital we still feel that it should be undivided and Jerusalem is that Historic religious center for the world and for the Jews and we stand with them. It is not an issue that we are not for the Palestinian cause but a matter that we are for Jerusalem being intact as the Capital and the Center of the Jewish nation.”
Lewis said instead of voting against the US decision, Belize should have abstained. No CARICOM country backed the US’ decision. Nevertheless, CARICOM was divided on the issue, with some including Belize supporting UN’s resolution while others, namely: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago abstained during the vote. It is noteworthy to mention that the UN’s vote is non-binding.
