Nigel Hawke’s Solgen no more

2 min read

The Solicitor General, or we should say the former Solicitor General, Nigel Hawke will not be serving another term in that position as his contract has not been renewed. In an interview with Prime Minister Dean Barrow today, he said the recommendation was made by Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte.

Honorable Dean Barrow Prime Minister of Belize: “The Attorney General who in fact made the recommendation I think simply wanted to move on and Mr. Hawk certainly in terms of my own interactions with him has been excellent. In terms of the cases that I have had not a personal interest in but a particular interest of the big cases that have gone to the CCJ his in the  supporting role I thought was all that we could have asked for so certainly on my part no judgment is to be assumed in consequence of the non renewal of his contract but for whatever administrative reasons, whatever his sense of what the fit was and what he would like to have made it, it wast the Attorney Genera that had made the recommendation. That’s where it stood and that is where it stands. I think as well also on the part of the Attorney General there is no animus against Mr. Hawk because really he is one of the most conscientious hard working Lawyers that I have ever encountered and I certainly wish him well.”

The position is currently being held by Elisa Montalvo as acting solicitor general.
