On April 15, 1.8 million Guatemalans voted in favor of taking their country’s claim on Belize to the International Court of Justice, ICJ. Following the successful referendum, the Belizean Government congratulated the Guatemalan Government and its people. GOB views the results as a step further toward permanently settling the age-old dispute between the two countries. The Government’s congratulatory message was reiterated on Friday, April 20 during a special meeting of the Organization of American States. Hipolito Novelo has the story.
The Government of Belize says it is committed to conducting its own referendum for the electorate to decide whether we should submit Guatemala’s claim to the ICJ for a final settlement. A date will be set after the national re-registration exercise is concluded.
