Belize’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wilfred Elrington, and his Guatemalan counterpart Sandra Jovel will meet in Washington DC tomorrow for a special meeting of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS). A release from the OAS states quote, “The Chair of the Permanent Council of the Organization of American States, Ambassador Juan Aníbal Barría, Permanent Representative of Chile, presents his compliments to the permanent representatives of the member states and has the honor to call a special meeting of the Permanent Council.” End of quote. Specific topics of what will be discussed have not been released. We do know that Guatemala has officially set its referendum date for April 15, 2018. We also know that recently, Magdalena Talamas was reassigned as Special Representative of the Organization of American States on Belize/Guatemala Affairs after Guatemalan sent a protest note to the OAS. The Guatemalan Government has rejected the findings of an OAS Special Independent Commission which was tasked to investigate the shooting death of 14-year-old Guatemalan Julio Alvarado Roano on April 16, 2016. Talamas supported the findings. The meeting will be aired live on the OAS Website and we’ll share the link on our Facebook page.
