Ombudman’s Office received 122 complaints for 2017

The Ombudsman’s office is tasked to investigate complaints of wrongdoings, which may be derived from a governmental authority.  In 2017, the Ombudsman’s office received one hundred and twenty-two complaints.  Love News spoke with the Ombudsman, Lionel Arzu, who shared the types of complaints his office received during that period.

Lionel Arzu Ombudsman of Belize: “From the 122: 37 has been referred to a third party because of no jurisdiction, 38 has been investigated or resolved,  24 is under investigation and 23 under initial inquiry and the types of complaints that we receive are against the Police entering people homes illegally from the allegations made, detaining them for an extended period of time. We also receive complaints from immigration laborer lands as related to issues by compliance.”

Arzu said that the annual report was tabled in the House of Representative last Friday. Arzu also noted that the Office of the Ombudsman is also used as a last resort to resolve an issue made against any government institution.
