An amendment to the Immigration, Belizean Nationality, and Passports Acts was successfully passed late in March. The amendment splits the functions of the Immigration Department. One half of the department will be responsible for granting nationality and passport while the remaining half will deal with immigration and border management. It is a move that the Opposition, People’s United Party strongly opposed in parliament. Recently PUP Senator Eamon Courtenay said that the decision quote, “allows fraud to be perpetrated in the Immigration Department.” End of quote. Yesterday as a response, the Prime Minister said that was political babble.
The amendment has not come into effect as yet.
