Police investigate three separate shootings, one involves a police officer

Police are investigating a series of shooting incidents that have taken place since Friday, April 12.  Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino of the Crimes Investigation Branch says that on that date, shortly after seven o’clock in the night, shots rang out on Dolphin Street, Belize City.

Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino C.I.B.: “Sometime around 7:30 PM C.I.B. personnel visited the KHMH and there they discovered Mr. Kasheef Myvett a twenty-six-year-old resident of Faber’s Rd. Mr. Myvett was suffering from a single gunshot wound to the right palm. He relayed to Police that he was walking on Dolphin Street through an alley when shots were fired and he received the injury. No one is detained and Police are investigating at this time.”

This incident occurred a few yards away from a police checkpoint; a motive is yet to be established.  Another shooting happened in Ladyville that involved a police officer. Inspector Ferrufino says it happened on Sunday night.

Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino C.I.B.: “ Police were responding to a burglary in progress when they encountered two male persons on a motorcycle. When police tried to detain the two persons, they got off the bike and in their attempts to flee they pointed what appeared to look like a firearm to the officer and the officer shot at the individual. He received a single gunshot wound to the right leg: Shawn Lanza 31 year old is the individual who got shot. The matter is being looked at by the Professional Standards Branch and we will give you an update whenever that investigation is through.”

The other suspect managed to escape police. Shawn Lanza is in stable condition and under police guard at the hospital.  A third shooting incident happened in Hopkins Village, Stann Creek District this morning. Police say they were alerted of the incident and visited the Southern Regional Hospital where the victim was transferred.  ASP Alejandro Cowo, Head of the Crimes Investigation Branch in the Belize District says they learnt of the incident shortly after midnight this morning.

ASP Alejandro Cowo Head of C.I.B.: “Police visited the Southern Regional Hospital where they observed Jessie Cal 25 years of Toledo District suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body. What police gathered so far is that just at about 11,  Jessie Cal and another friend was socializing in Hopkins Village when they got into an altercation with a group of male persons. To avoid any further confrontation they drove towards their home address and whilst approaching the intersection with Hopkins Rd. and the Southern Highway they observed two male persons on the street side attempting to stop them. They did not stop and that is when the two persons fired shots at their vehicle injuring also Jessie Cal. Jessie Cal was brought to the Hospital and is being admitted in a stable condition.

Reporter: “And the nature of the altercation?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo Head of C.I.B.: “It is a dispute amongst them whilst they were socializing at a certain establishment in Hopkins Village.”

Cal is in stable condition. No arrests have been made.
