Convictions for murders is perhaps the primary criticism of the Belize Police Department. However, the police department continues to make strides in the investigation of crimes even when they are no longer in the daily headlines. Earlier today, Assistant Superintendent of Police, and the Officer in Charge of CIB for Belize City, Alejandro Cowo told us that the department had arrested three individuals for separate murders that occurred across the country.

A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head C.I.B.: “The first arrest we have is referenced the shooting death of Carlos Noel Reyes which occurred on the 28th of March 2019 at Dangriga Town. In reference to that investigation police arrested Sterling Perez, 24 year old, from Jane Usher Boulevard for the crime of murder. Also, reference to the shooting death of Kyle Middleton which occurred on the 21st of May 2018, police arrested and charged Hugh Middleton 24 year old Belizean of a Roaring Creek address for the crime of murder likewise. Reference the shooting of Eric Hernandez which occurred on the 8th of June police arrested and charged Tyron Jason John Martinez 18 years for the crime of attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm. Those are the incidences out district, well as you know the investigation never closes down. The police were following on several leads and fortunately they came onto the correct lead which led to the detention and later to the arrest of Mr. Hugh Middleton.”

An employee of Bowen and Bowen Limited was also robbed while on the job. The police say the robbers escaped with a thousand dollars and a cell phone belonging to Malcolm Mortis.

A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head C.I.B.: “There was a robbery on Tuesday just after midday. Business Sales Supervisor for Bowen and Bowen Mr. Malcolm Mortiz ,28 years, was doing his delivery on Gabourel Lane Belize City. Whilst he was inside of his vehicle he was approached by two persons of dark complexion: one of them was armed with a firearm. The person pointed the firearm at him and as a result, robbed him of his cellular phone and $1000 Belize currency. Thereafter the two male persons made good their escape, so far the police have not detained anyone in reference to this robbery.”

Reporter: “Any surveillance cameras in the area captured the incident?”

A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head C.I.B.: “There are surveillance cameras in the area that police are viewing that I believe it will assist during the investigation.”

While many people in the districts believe crime is restricted to the former capital, that’s a quite inaccurate assumption. One of the most peaceful and idyllic communities experienced some violence on Wednesday night. The police say a man was stabbed while socializing at the “I and I” bar on Caye Caulker.

A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head C.I.B.: “Last night Caye Caulker police responded to a stabbing incident where they saw William Thomas 21 years of Caye Caulker village suffering from an apparent stab wound to the back. He was transported to Belize City Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital because of his condition. He went under surgery a while ago and he is listed in critical but stable condition. What police gathered so far is that Mr. Thomas was in front of I and I Reggae Bar located in front of Luciano Reyes St. when he had an altercation with another person who inflicted the stab wound to him. Police have since detained that person, he is custody and police are interviewing that person to see what other information they can get from him.”

Reporter: “ What may have precipitated this altercation between these two individuals?”

A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo – Head C.I.B.: “That is something that we are trying to establish as we have not had the opportunity to speak to Mr. Thomas since he went under surgery this morning so he is sedated at this time and we cannot speak to him.”

Earlier in the week we told you about the burglary of the Solid Waste Transfer Station near Belize Waste Control on the George Price Highway. Three men shot at the police as they escaped on foot from the getaway vehicle on Krooman Lane in Belize City early Monday morning. The police say they are looking for three suspects and they have charged the driver of the vehicle Erwin Castillo  for robbery and burglary.
